Communicating through drawing

Drawing is a tool of communication that kids get to know in their early stages of development; for if they are given a paper and a pen, they would immediately start drawing random lines. For us as adults, the lines are random, while in the kids’ perspective they mean something. Kids are trying to communicate through these drawings. So, what do they mean?

There four stages that kids go through in terms of their drawing skills:

1)    Lines stage: at this stage kids do actions that they are not necessarily intended.

2)    Scribbling with colors: kids try to represent the place in their drawings. Research showed that kids express their admiration for order and system.

3)    Symbolic drawings: at this stage kids don’t draw what they see, but what they know. Though they are unable to realize the size and perspective of things.

4)    Transparent House stage: Until the age of 4, kids don’t take in consideration the structure of things, they might draw a head beside the body, not on the top of. That develops till the age of 6.

Knowing that, what message do you think your kid is trying to tell through drawing?
